Here's how to unlock your Iphone

The hard (ware) way
Thursday, 7 August 2008, 12:40

THOSE CRAZY GUYZ over at USBfever have opened up pre-ordering with very simple hardware unlocking the 3G Iphone to make it SIM free.

Instead of illegally software flashing the phone and possibly bricking it, there’s now apparently an easy hardware fix. All that’s needed is a thin microcontroller sitting between the SIM card and the actual phone's SIM socket.

Yep, that’s it - no more, no less – only a tiny 0.10mm flexible printed circuit board and all of Jobs' grand schemes of world domination are at an end.

The card tricks the phone into always operating within a certain mode, not hampering the phone's performance in anyw ay. The INQ was asked not to divulge the secrets on how it’s actually achieved, so we won’t. From what we gather it all makes perfect sense on how it fundamentally works, with no smoke and mirrors or snake oil being used.

Going ahead with this as a way to unlock the phone doesn’t appear to infringe or void any of the phone's warranties, so there’s a distinctly positive side to it. There’s also no need to open the phone, no need for server delays or running any more cracks or illegal hacks.

The only minor downside is that you do have to cut a chunk of the SIM card off for the bespoke controller to gain access to the phone from the operator's card. This doesn’t seem too much of a risk or a bother, but some people out there might not be entirely comfortable with this.

They’ve even provided an image on how this could be done, with a hole-punch of all things.

The Iphone 3G SIM unlock card will set you back $34.99, plus the Iphone of course and your own contract. If you are gullible enough to fall for the fruit-based company mobile phone, this could be the easiest way to free yourself and regain some self-respect. µ

Been around for a while

These devices have been around for a while, generally cost <$20. You can get them for RIM, Nokia and others meaning an automatic "unlock" of a phone without tampering. Perfect :)

Works on all 3G phones?

I understand this technique works with pretty much all 3G phones that are network locked... though you might need a different chip for each individual phone.

It's supposed to have been quite a popular technique to get around network locks of phones which are 3G.
