TROUBLED PDA maker Palm has confirmed that it is planning to lay off "hundreds of staff".
The company only has 1,247 staff and is not saying exactly how many will get thrown out into the cold and the snow around Christmas time.
One News.com source says that the number could be 'hundreds'.
Earlier this month Palm said that its quarterly revenue and gross margin were well below expectations.
It blamed the fact that its new product had not been release and the Treo smartphone was being ignored by customers these days.
CEO Ed Colligan is not one of the people who will be cleaning their desk and collecting their P45s and pink slips, yet. µ
Is this the slippery slope leading to the end of Palm?

Well, as a Palm fanboy from the Palm III to Lifedrive period, I hope so.

In the days of USR ownership, Palm had no serious competitors and a dedicated fan base, but over the years with changes in corporate ownership the company has lost it's way and lost it's fan base on the way.

Over the past 4 years, Palm has haemorrhaged customers to the Microsoft platform, because of it's lack of development and support on products after release. In general PDA owners felt abandoned by Palm after they handed over their $300 for their shiny new gadget.

In the end, the last straw for me was the refusal to support WPA Enterprise on the Lifedrive, but to implement as an after-sales patch on the T|X.

As John Lydon once said "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated!"

Bye Palm, I wish I could say it was swell.
