5,000 Opterons spotted in a great big lorry

Project Blackbox, Sun, AMD and Google

A YEAR OR SO ago, Cringely wrote a column about Google putting data centres in tractor trailer rigs full of Opterons for whatever nefarious purposes it has in mind.

Today, Sun announced, or will announce Project Blackbox, a tractor trailer rig full of Opterons.

Coincidence? Anyone want to guess at the first customer when it is official in a few hours? Whoever ends up buying it, Sun has a great idea on their hands. I thing this will do very well for them, a lot of servers in a tidy package, with lots of literal horsepower. Good one guys. Five thousand Opteron cores in a big rig. Will wonders never cease? µ
