SUN IS doing a lot better in the Unix market, according to bean counters Gabriel Consulting Group.

Network World reports that Sun is only second to IBM and has overtaken HP as the Unix vendor of choice. Gabriel Consulting Group released the results of its Unix Vendor Preference Survey yesterday, it shows that last year Sun lagged far behind HP.

This year it not overtook the maker of printer ink and seemed close to catching Big Blue as well.

Dan Olds, GCG's principal analyst and CEO, said that Sun had done a lot of things right last year. One of the best things was the introduction of its T1000/T2000 multicore Sparc servers.

Customers surveyed 43 per cent thought IBM to be the dominant Unix vendor by 2011, with 34 per cent thinking it would be Sun and 24 per cent supporting HP.

The survey was conducted while HP was in the middle of its boardroom scandal over spying, which might have had something to do with the outfit's poor showing.
