Miliband promises to emit less hot air

80 percent cut says PM in waiting
Thursday, 16 October 2008, 17:40

THE UK GOVERNMENT has committed us to cut greenhouse emissions by 80 percent by 2050 – replacing the previous goal of 60 percent.

Climate Change and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband told MPs the government would not ignore green issues because of the current economic crisis.

Miliband said, "In tough economic times, some people ask whether we should retreat from our climate change objectives.

"In our view it would be quite wrong to row back and those who say we should, misunderstand the relationship between the economic and environmental tasks we face."

Mr Miliband also aims to force energy companies to introduce fairer pricing after Ofgem warned of overcharging.

Mr Miliband stated that, "Unfair pricing which hits the most vulnerable hardest is completely unacceptable". The government expects rapid action or explanation in order to sort out this problem and Miliband will meet with the six main energy companies next month to hear of their progress.

The Commons heard yesterday that the Energy Bill would be amended to introduce a "feed-in tariff" which will guarantee prices for micro-generation projects such as wind turbines, which are able to supply electricity to the national grid.

Lord Turner told Miliband that the 80 percent target would be "challenging but feasible", and could be achieved at a cost of one to two percent of GDP in 2050.

Lib Dem climate change and energy spokesman Steve Webb said Mr Miliband's decision to exclude aviation and shipping in the 80 percent target made, “A mockery of his commitments.”

"It's like telling everyone you're going on a calorie-controlled diet but not counting cream cakes,” he said.

However Greg Clark, shadow climate change secretary, for the Conservatives, welcomed Mr Miliband's announcements.

He agreed, "The choice between aggressive and ambitious action on carbon reduction and a successful, powerful economy is, in fact, not a choice at all - they are one and the same". µ

He might as well make it 99%

In 2050 he'll be long gone, so he's out to get the brownie points NOW.

One mistake

His brother (the Foreign Secretary) is the "wannabe" next PM and Labour party leader.

I found his speetch today bit out of place. Old Blighty has to cut the CO2 by 80% while China produces one coal plant every week, plus the rest of pollution.

No Problem!

By 2030, we will be talking about global cooling again...... so it seems 2050 should be no problem! :)

B**********

2050 is a stupid year to target why not any closer this makes my blood boil 2050 what a load of b*****t. Who's to say he'll be in that job they should be doing something now oh wait they can't because they just spent Tax Payers money on buying out the banks and speaking of that my G/F just got a letter for a £35 charge for being £4.67 overdrawn cheeky MF's thats what I can't understand they made billions from OD's charges where's it all gone.

Back on topic they should setting a target like 2015 and cut it down by 30-40% a reasonable target.

Whatever happened to the ice-age I was promised 25 years ago?

Where's this ice-age?

Is there really going to be global warming and a disaster? Can we get a money-back guarentee on this?

Those 2 brother's are the shiftiest looking pair on UK TV. They make Cameron or Mandelson (voodoo) look trustworthy.

A few more numbers

The reference for the final goal is the emission level of 1990. That makes the math a bit spongy. Talk about politics.

With 41 years left until 2050, this would mean a reduction of only 3.85% per year. It is important to really achieve this decrease every year without creative mathematics or the whole scheme does not work. Miliband is irrelevant. What matters is that every individual person understands what is at stake.

I am sure China will follow suit, while the people in the USA will still believe that wealth is based on the ability to drive an SUV to the grocery store (and they will still not be able to cope with the metric system). Sweden was one of the first countries to aim for a reduction down to 65% by 2020, the same 3.85% per year, because the Swedish government realized that developing countries have a right to develop (a thought that does not cross the mind of the average Fox News viewer), which certainly means they will produce higher levels of emission.

Easy to achieve

These figures are easy to achieve!
Just continue antagonizing the Ruskies and all our gas will be cut off and with the Middle East oil all going to China we'll soon drop our CO2 emissions levels!
