The
2.8GHz/512K 533MHz bus Pentium 4 has dropped by 21 per cent since the last cut in October, when it stood at $401. The
2.66Ghz/512/533 chip has dropped by 24 per cent from the October the 2nd price of $305, and that's true for the
2.6GHz/512/400, indicating this chip is at the effective end of its life.
Intel is moving all of its desktop P4s that ran using the 400MHz system bus to the newer 533MHz system bus. At the same time, it is rapidly phasing out the Pentium 4s with only 256K of cache.
The Celeron 2GHz/128K chip has dropped by 19% from its October $83 price, the 1.80GHz 17% from the $69 figure, and the 1.70GHz by 22% from the October $54 figure. The same price cut operates on the 1.40GHz, indicating this chip will soon be a dead parrot.
Intel introduces its 3.06GHz Pentium 4 on Thursday, to a fanfare of celebration.
The firm also told its PC customers of plans to introduce a 2.2GHz Celeron Pentium 4 shortly, and we understand that 533MHz Xeon chips will be introduced on the 17th of this month. ยต
