AMD's Opteron intro increases chip war tension

The first cuts aren't the deepest

PRICE CUTS AMD has made to a range of its Opteron processors, signal another escalation in the price war it's indulging in with Intel.

We reported on AMD's new chip introductions earlier today.

But all indications from the latest Intel week four roadmaps indicate that Chipzilla is staring AMD right in the eyes, and holding out on its pricing across the desktop, mobile and server range as it continues to ramp its next gen products.

For example, Intel is holding steady on its desktop multi core prices until the 22nd of April and will then use that opportunity to severely slash chip prices.

Chip analyst Malcolm Penn of Future Horizons told the INQ last week that the inevitable result of the price wars on both the processor and the memory fronts was damage to the overall industry. µ
