Dell introduces Inspiron Mini 12

Twelve-inch rule
Monday, 27 October 2008, 14:04

DELL HAS INTRODUCED the Inspiron Mini 12 to Japan and by the end of November us Brits should get a look in too. But why has Dell brought out a Mini 12 just after the Mini 9?

Well this netbook has defied the strict and unbreakable code of netbooks at the first hurdle, as it has a 12-inch screen – no other netbook has dared cross the 11-inch barrier.

It also runs Windows Vista, though still on a single Gigabyte of Ram.

Internally the Inspiron Mini 12 is very similar to its smaller relations – it features an Atom processor, and 60-80GB hard drive.

Like the Inspiron Mini 9, this netbook is aimed at teens, tweens, travellers and Tweeters.

The Mini 12 will be available initially in retail outlets in Japan.

The netbook will be launched online globally in November with configurations starting under Ubuntu and Windows XP OS which will also be available before the end of the year.

Other features of the Mini 12 include a starting weight of only 2.72 lbs, a thickness of less than an inch, Windows Vista Home Basic, built-in web cam, 1GB of RAM, a choice of 60GB or 80GB hard drive, built-in Bluetooth and 802.11b/g wireless.

You have up until the end of the year to save up the £500-£600 it will set you back. µ

Why bother?

spending £600 on this, when you can get a HP TX system with much better spec and a 12.1" touchscreen for the same money?

big differance!

Internally the Inspiron Mini 12 is very similar to its smaller relations – it features an Atom processor, and 60-80GB hard drive.

Well lets see the largest drive you can get in the mini9 is a SSD16gig harddrive and the drive in the new Mini12 is a SATA 60-80 gig Drive! BIG DIFFERENCE!

Different Atom

The Mini 12 is using the Silverthorne and not the Diamondville like the 9. While both are Atoms (WTF Intel).. it's essentially 2 different processor and chipset.
That's why there's a Vista version.

same atom

Do your homework "sotr". This atom has the same performance as the old atom. Further, the chipset will restrict it to 1gb no matter what. This is actually LESS powerful than other netbooks and it's trying to use Vista. This is only one of a number of design flaws. WHO would buy this joke?

are you sure...?

To the author of the article: Are you sure that's suppose to be pounds and not dollars? If it was in dollars it would make perfect sense being in ratio with the costs of the current Inspiron 9,14, and 15 US pricing.
