Anandtech offers its consideration for entry level systems. You'll find four systems based on the AMD sempron, the Celeron D, the Athlon 64 as well as a Pentium 4 rig. Prices vary from $600 to $1000. You need to be skillful at assembling computers. The systems they put together, even the $600, would easily match computers costing twice as much one year ago. Also watch out for overclocking.
Hardcoreware takes a go at the Pentium D 820 processor which as our regular readers know, is the cheapest dual core processor offered by Intel. With two 2.8GHz processors fused in one and a rock bottom price of $245.99, you could easily bet your money on it when it comes to value for money in the multi threading/tasking department. And guess what? They're "impressed".
The new HP Compaq NX6125 is on review at Hardwarecentral. While on the surface, it seems to be a casual run-of-the-mill laptop, below the hood, it offers quite some innovations. First there's that Turion 64 CPU which runs at 2GHz and offers 1MB L2 cache. No Pentium M killer though, then that fingerprint reader, a 15-inch monitor, 512MB memory, an ATI Radeon X300 controller, a DVD writer and small details like a scratch resistant laminates which makes of this laptop a sure winner.
Phoronix sent us news about the test they made on the Tyan Tomcat i7221A/S5151 which is based on the Intel E7221. Actually, it is a server bord but compatible with P4 rather than Xeons. Expensive it is - as are most Tyan boards - it has great performance, three NICs, and five fan headers make it ideal for entry level server applications.
Two reviews from Online Magazine Custom PC. First there's that Aopen i915GMm-HFS motherboard which comes with a socket 479 and therefore caters for the Pentium M. It is based on the 915GM chipset. It supports Dual DDR2, 16x PCIe plus it has IOs for Compositive, Svideo and even HDTV. Other stuff that makes this one a winner is 8-channel sound with SPDIF, SATA II compatibility, twin GbE LAN ports, plus loads of USB 2.0 ports. CustomPC overclocks it and loves it to bits.
The second review is a component that would suit the above. The Hauppauge Win TV Nova T USB 2.0 is an external TV tuner that can receive Freeview. It does what it says on the box. With some decent software throwed in and few incompatibilities, the Nova T is the perfect match for those on the move and looking to stay tuned to the latest TV news.
Cooltechzone has a review of the Abit X700 Pro video card which is a 128MB card. Good looking, decent performance and right price. This is how Abit's latest addition to its graphics range can be described. The form of its HSF is qute peculiar covering both the memory and the GPU. Unfortunately, the 6600GT exists and stomps the X700 Pro besting it in almost all configurations. If you can afford it, go for the former. µ
