The next five years of gaming discussed

CES 007 Massive resolutions, Raytracing and more on your mobile
Wednesday, 10 January 2007, 11:54
WE HAD a chance to be the part of a panel named Game Power in which DAAMIT, Nvidia and Intel went together head to head with some mobile players and the Vole.

The mobile players included the mighty Texas instrument, ARM and a company called Rapport which does the multi-core stuff called Kilocore we mentioned here. All of these guys talked about the future of gaming.

The desktop lads think that the future brings bigger resolutions, more anti-aliasing and ultimately Ray tracing. Ray Tracing is something that graphic cards still cannot touch as it needs more processing power than even the G80 or R600 can provide. The problem will be solved with faster and smarter chips.

The resolution could go up to 3840x2160 if not even higher and the corresponding games will need better content, wiser artificial intelligence and good atmosphere.

When it comes to a mobile gaming you have the stuff like Omaps 2 and 3, small 3D chips with programmable Shaders and almighty 3D. The only problem for these boys is that the content is still not there.

DAAMIT's Ian McN, Nvidia's Roy Taylor, Intel's Mr. Lake.

Mobile, handheld games needs better content and it is amusing that the mobile chaps are still fighting the desktop lads. The mobile market has the volumes but has not yet made or marketed games with a must-have mark on them.

On the other hand, the desktop guys know how to make good games and how to market them, but the market is still tiny compared to handheld. ยต
