Bamboozled by Asus

CeBIT 2008 Wanna buy some grass dude?
Saturday, 8 March 2008, 07:25

WHAT IS NEW from Asus at CeBIT? How about Bamboo in laptop, desktop and monitor forms. The strangest part is that it works.

Asus Bamboo laptop

The bamboo cased laptops are in their concept line, something they do at most shows. If you have been following the company, you will know that these concepts end up in production in short order, the ones they were showing off a year or two ago were leather clad.

The leather ones are now in production, several lines have leather trim, and later this year, you will be able to get a bamboo laptop from Asus. They are going in to limited production with these parts sometime in 2008.

If they do well, and I hope they do, you will be able to buy laptops cased in fast growing grass as well. Given how tough bamboo is, I think this is a damn good idea, and lends itself to case modding in whole new ways. Well done Asus. µ

I would want to know what glues they use in the bamboo. There are non-toxic processes and very toxic processes (namely glue) that hold those bamboo strips together.

This could be a good thing that Asus has created but it also could be the last thing you want to be touching and holding close to your body as toxic glues off-gas pretty bad.

They sure are pretty tho.

Are these being marketed as 'green'?

I would be surprised if these were being marketed as 'green' computers given that bamboo grows fast and is strong like you say. Its often quoted as being the next replacement for woods so I think this is a fairly good idea.

And yes they do look quite stylish although they are prob not to everyone's tastes. :-)

Bamboo!

Wonderful! Using a fast growing grass as a case material certainly is more "green" than metal or plastic. The only question, is it a metal or plastic case only covered in bamboo, or is the case itself bamboo, with a large reduction in metal/plastic?

And bamboo looks nicer than metal or plastic, IMHO.

FSS/RF interference

They would have to be wood outside a metal casing to shield the guts from random radio interference, and to comply in this respect with FCC guidelines about accepting and emitting radiation.

Looks pretty but...

what about emi shielding? There needs to be metal in there somehow.

Another thing that really stands out with this styling is how, in a windscreen form factor, the laptop still has the same old crappy cramped keyboard instead of a full size standard layout, which clearly would fit quite easily.

Why did IBM kill the butterfly? Why doesn't Lenovo bring it back?

Lovely!

I will absolutely buy this, a thousand times over!

great idea!

I wish the big PC guys would innovate like this!
(apple too...)

My only concern is...
does it dissipate heat well?

Off topic,
My MBP gets damn hot as is, although it does use aluminum "foil" for its external case.

I would adore a bamboo Mac.

*If you don't believe me about the foil bit, well, I guess you don't own a MBP. The MBP case is crap and the Macbook is a much sturdier built laptop than the Macbook Pro.

I don't know why, just is that way.

What I'd really like from Apple, aside from a bamboo laptop, is a Macbook with the internals of a Macbook Pro. I hate touching aluminum all day.

Anyway,
I thought it alright to inject a bit of Apple into this Asus thread since 'sus makes Apples gear.

Bravo Asus, bamboo case.
Love it.

AT adds: I think he likes it.

Bamboo Cooker

I hope it comes with a lengthy warranty. Seeing as wood is not a bad insulator I would expect to see plenty of toasted chips.

Airport security. Wooden laptop.

Yeah, good luck with that...

more Bamboo

I'd love one and I hope that it is the case that is bamboo, not bamboo covered plastic/metal. As for the EMI shielding, all you need is some aluminium foil. Nope, you don't need steel armour plate to accomplish EMI shielding. In fact you could use mesh of the right pitch, but foil will do quite nicely. After all that is all that is used in shielded Cat 5 and Cat 6 cable.

Bamboozlers, indeed.

Asus should also be using fine briarwood,
burl :- walnut, elm and maple finished in high-gloss polyester lacquer and hand polished such as the likes of Bentley and Rolls Royce trims or pipes, and manufactured in the UK.
I wonder how the percussion sounds. Will these splinter if you drop them?
Today's bamboo is tomorrow's fodder for Chinese, Hoary, Sumatra, & Lesser bamboo voles; pandas and termites.
