Andrew Norwood, research vice president at Gartner Dataquest put it this way: "2005 was not a good year for the DRAM industry, but it could have been a lot worse."
He said industry revenues contracted for the first time since 2001 but added: "The single digit decline was mild compared to the revenue decline of 63.2 per cent seen in 2001 and in other recent downturns."
DRAM revenues fell five per cent in 2005 to $25 billion, down from $26.3 billion in 2004.
"It's very clear, NAND flash saved the DRAM industry from a major collapse." The major Dramurai such as Samsung and Hynix switched production from DRAM to NAND.
He said those two manufacturers continue their DRAM hegemony with slightly under 50 per cent of the market between them. Micron and Infineon saw their market share decline, but Nanya and Elpida "were the star performers in 2005," said Norwood. ยต
