Compaq denies Tru64 layoffs

We're put right, indirectly
Thu Jan 03 2002, 10:49
A COMPAQ AMBASSADOR accredited to the court of Saint Unix has sent a worldwide email denying three assertions made by IT rumour sheet the INQUIRER.

We are leaving the headers off the email to protect our network of moles, holed up in Compaq caves in Germany, Nashua. Houston, Fort Worth, and elsewhere on the planet. µ

There was a an article in "the inquirer" with the headlines of "Compaq readying Tru64 layoffs". The article asserts the following;

o There will be large lay offs in the group the first of the year
o That HP will not use any Tru64 or TruCluster code in the converged product. And Oracle is upset (or will be).
o That Tru64/ALPHA sales are way off plan (as well as OVMS).

They claimed "sources at Compaq Germany" told them.

None of the above statements/assertions are true. We are making excellent progress planning the converged UNIX with HP. HP is very impressed with the technology (and the people) and are excited about working on a combined UNIX. Since its the quiet period, we can't talk details on quarterly results, but the ALPHA sales in Q4 were tracking ahead of plan. And there are no large layoffs planned in Tru64. So the Inquirer starts the year with a 3 pitch strike out*.

On a brighter note, I hope everyone had a great holiday. We have some great challenges in CY02 (Wildcat, EV7/Marvel, the quality program, customer satisfaction improvements, the Converged UNIX, migration programs, etc..). I look forward to working with the team to succeed on each and every one of them.

* FOR OUR BRITISH readers, a 3 pitch strike out is a term which comes from popular US game, Rounders.
