Journalism school debates keeping Yahoo money

Ethical issues

STANFORD UNIVERSITY is thinking about whether it should keep a million dollar grant from Yahoo for a journalism fellowship.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the former winners of the John S. Knight Fellowship are a little miffed at Yahoo's history of turning over journalists to Chinese authorities.

Ironically, the money pays to bring a journalist over from a country where the news media is criticised and training them in the ethics and skills of the American media.

Peter Sussman, a 1978 Knight fellow and former San Francisco Chronicle editor, said some Knight alumni had been debating the grant via email.

Some thought the donation was "tainted", other hacks believed that the money from Yahoo could help further discussions of press freedom and corporate responsibility.
