High density Athlon server launched

IT MAY BE THE CHINESE YEAR of the Horse but for chip companies like Intel, Transmeta and Via, it's the year of the high density server.

We thought at first that AMD would keep out of this neck of the woods. When we had lunch with AMD a couple of weeks ago, the suits definitely gave us the impression that they would let Intel and Transmeta thrash this one out.

But now we've heard from CCSI that it is offering what it claims is the first 1U server, chassis and power supply for Athlon MPs.

The RC0103, the company told us, features dual parallel one+one power supplies, will support up to hot swap IDE or SCA SCSI hard disks, and one fixed IDE or SCSI hard drive.

The individual box measures 17.5-inch by 26-inch by 1.69-inch.

The boxes use the "Wind Tunnel" proprietary cooling system and support the entire range of MP chips, the firm said.

It expects them to be stacked up in Beowulf clusters and the like.

No pricing was available at press time. ยต
