Sun takeover speculation increases

Rumour mill churns on Wall Street

AT THE BEGINNING of this month Bloomberg reported that Sun was being subjected to takeover gossip on Wall Street.

And yesterday the speculators started speculating all over again - with the shares of SUNW rising during the day by nearly nine per cent, with the price closing at $4.21.

Yesterday 125.5 million shares changed hands, while in early May the figure was 131 million.

Several names were mentioned in the previous Bloomberg report, including Big Blue and HP.

And the gossip reached a crescendo yesterday after Ed Zander, a former Sun president, joined equity firm Silver Lake Partners.

Yesterday the firm glowed to incandescence on news of a Meta Group report that suggested CEO Scott McNealy should go, and that his firm Sun Microsystems had all the appearance of DEC. ยต
