Ebay scraps all non e-payment methods in US

Shenanigans ongoing
Tuesday, 23 September 2008, 13:19

IT SEEMS EBAY NEVER learns. After failing miserably to impose Paypal as the sole payment method for Aussie users, the online auction giant is up to its old tricks again, this time in the US.

A recent announcement on the Ebay FAQ site states that checks and money orders will both be scrapped as payment methods by October, leaving only e-payment methods like Paypal and ProPay.

Competing e-payment methods to Ebay’s Paypal - like Google Checkout, Amazon's Checkout and Flexible Payment – will also henceforth be banned because: “Google's and Amazon's products and services compete with Ebay on a number of levels, so we are not going to allow them on Ebay.”

And after a statement like that, Ebay still has the gall to claim the move is all in the best interest of security, buyer protection and customer satisfaction.

Ebay, the Aussies didn’t buy it, and neither is anyone else. µ

just another nail.

They are either desperate or lost.
Either way, I do wish they would just shut up about this Paypal only idea and get back to work.

Paypal sucks anyway. Its a pretend bank.
A real bank cant just freeze your account for an unqualified reason, block you and simply keep your money.

Nuts Nuts Nuts

And this is why I am keeping an eye out for them to enforce it here because you know it's going to be coming.

I shop for new products on Amazon all the time but use Ebay for 2nd hand PC parts I've bought some right bargains. But I did have 1 security breech on my PayPal account this year apparently I bought £700 dinning table and chairs it got sorted but I would have loved to have seen what it looked like.

Anyways Amazon.Co.Uk have better security because they let you use Credit/Debit cards and there checkout feature plus I've been a member for 6 years and had not 1 security breech from Amazon.

oh great

oh great! like i really use e-bay. I ordered some coil overs once, saw who was really making the money (e-bay shipper), and never used it again. But i do have to admit that americans are dumb enough to let this slide. I live in america

Don't care

I canceled my ebay account over a year ago. They are already down the toilet as far as I'm concerned so if they want to flush a few more times it's no loss.

Tell them how you feel

I've sent an email to Ebay, telling them how I feel. It probably won't do any good, but it's easy to do and if they get a lot of pushback, something may change.

US Postal Money Orders are completely secure, and penalties are severe for misuse. There's absolutely no reason to prohibit them (except to drive people to PayPal).

ebay

I tried ebay twice. First time went ok. 2nd time, I was unable to use it because my email address was in their system and I did not wish to go through the hassle of jumping through hoops to get the password to an account I had no intention of using. So I guess I tried ebay once and the 2nd time turned me off to them.

We'll buy it, don't worry

If there's ever been a nation of people who willfully spit on their own consumer rights to benefit big business, it's the people of the United States. I think you'd be surprised at the number of people who will not only accept but vehemently defend moves like this over some confused sense of "liberty."

Then I will close my eBay account for good.

Goodbye eBay

Good riddence to bad rubbish. Maybe now with this latest load of malarky the only real solution is to make an auction to end all auctions. ebay should put itself up for sale on its' own site. it is no longer relevant to any who use it.

Only a lawsuit away from change though...

Give it a little time and they'll be backpedaling after the FTC shreds them or they get hit with a lawsuit or two. Apparently their legal department is staffed with people with fake law degrees or they are incredibly stupid if they think this is even remotely legal in the United States.

The U.S. Constitution and Federal Law REQUIRES that any currency minted/printed by the U.S. Government MUST be accepted as payment for any debts incurred in the U.S. Arguably this includes U.S. Postal Money Orders since they are monetary certificates printed by the U.S. Government.

Other payments are allowed (checks, debit and credit cards, etc.) BUT you can never legally refuse to accept currency minted/printed by the U.S. Government.

I don't like Paypal

Ebay has said for some time that only Paypal is to be used for it's auctions. I've ignored it. I post sales in my own HTML, and I always include "NO PAYPAL ACCEPTED! MONEY ORDERS ONLY!" at the top of the ad. No trouble so far because of that.

If ebay successfully bars all non-PayPal transactions, I'll simply stop using ebay. I'll either use another online service, or pitch my excess stuff into the garbage.

Ebay = Stupid idiots

I don't understand the decision processes that ebay has come up. They finally fixed their feedback system and now this?

Ya. Paypal has some very unethical policies and allows too many scammers. They should be shut down just for assisting illegal activities.

I've cut back my ebay usage after having some really bad auctions. Only so many times a person can get burned before they stop going to ebay.

LOOK AT THE FEES

my recent investigation of Ebay fees revealed this...

* lower listing fees.....
* incredibly high "final auction fees"

I remember when Ebay was happy with 6%.. then 8% ... then all heck broke loose when they went near 9-10%...

Well, I just looked into the category of home products - it's 12% and that's before listing fees and Paypal's 3.5%+

How does anyone AFFORD to do business with Ebay when they are getting 15% of the booty.

For my recent auctions - for razor blades - I was paying Ebay $2+ for the listing and final auction fee on an item that cost $15 - the shipping was $1.50. The post office can ship it across the country for a cheaper price than Ebay to "just" list it.

I'm off to Craig's list

Call it something else...

So we offer "Payment on Pickup" and actually wait for the check to come in the mail.

They are shooting themselves in the foot!

surprised?

I'm not...their last ceo was a moron, their new one is the antichrist...they have a new business model and only care about profits..which isn't that bad (we DO live in a capitalist society after all) but guess what....they have PLENTY ALREADY!!! I guess 8 billion+ a year isn't enough growth for their business "model"..I'm so dissapointed in these greedy self righteous pricks running this sham of a corporation. I joined in 96 and it was a great site with a great service until they forgot those of us who made them rich and ruined it with excessive fees and way too much micromanagement..The site hasn't had any meaningful redesigns or anything in over 12 yrs??? ...reminds me of Microsoft...same thing. is there ANY difference between Office 2003 or 2007?? no, just more money money money...And people wonder why we got in this fiscal mess??? Ok I feel better now ;)
