Novell punts NetWare to Linux

OES 2 to complete OS morphing
Fri Dec 01 2006, 13:54
NOVELL WILL shunt NetWare services onto Suse Linux with the next version of Open Enterprise Server (OES), its NetWare/Linux hybrid OS.

While the first OES retained the NetWare kernel, OES 2 will "complete the shift to providing workgroup services completely on Suse Linux Enterprise, while helping long-time customers maintain their NetWare investment". In other words, NetWare services will now sit atop Linux or, if you prefer, you can run NetWare under Suse's Xen virtualisation.

Certainly, NetWare loyalists will be keeping a careful eye on Novell's promise to, "make traditional NetWare workgroup services run on Linux as well or better than they do on NetWare or Windows and simplify the migration of those services to Linux." In terms of features, plans include better interoperability with Windows, natch, on the back of the Novell-Microsoft pact, plus storage and file-management "innovations".

OES 2 is "scheduled to ship in 2007", according to a press release and Novell has already lined up software supporters including CA, Symantec, McAfee and Trend Micro. µ
