Fix: install openoffice, configure Firefox to open .doc files with that. (At least until someone works out how to use a doc file to hack openoffice)
Might be interesting to find out from MS whether the free word viewer program is afflicted by the same bug, or not.

Dear Jock McFrock
The point of a Hardware Roundup is to tell who is reviewing what. And no dictionary English - Your Language needed in the process!! If you'd give this information it would be nice. If you'd make a summary of the review it would be great.
But all you do is give the links (cos I mainly can't understand what you're babbling, and where I did, it wasn't much said).
I'm not even gonna try to check my spelling, cos you sure never heard of English!!

Possibly someone could check Mr. Diesen's numbers. The SIA is reporting sales up 8% yoy and 2.3% sequentially.

You guys should find better sources for your news... And the last person you'd want to talk to for accurate graphic news is Fido. He couldn't buy a clue but he sure does like to shill for Nvidia and ATI every chance he gets each and everyday.

Subject: AMD goes green at 65nm
"Mind you, a nice green idea might be to replace customers earlier AMD chips with these nice new ones free of charge. The FX53 under this desk here seems to consume about the same power as the whole of Zimbabwe. The light in the street seem to dim when it's fired up.
It might cost AMD a few bob, but, hey, what's a few million bucks when the future of the planet is at stake?"
Sure, blame AMD for having made power-hungry Athlon FX processors. It's all true. But AMD is just half of the equation. The other half is composed of power-hungry fanboys (and journalists, and everyone else) who buy said processory. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, you looker-for-motes, you.

Me thinks a better PR move would be to replace those furnace P4 chips free of cost. Perhaps limiting the distribution to the first 100 P4EE owners, or something of the sort...

Your 65nm "amd is energy efficient bla bla.." you should also mention why they didn't mention the 4x4, as it more or less requires a nuclear plant to power it.
how about that energy efficient.

Of course chips sales are down. No one with a clue would touch Vista. Apparently no one at the chip companies has a clue...

Funny you didn't complain when Intel's P4s drew so much electrical power that the utility companies almost melted to the ground but you find all kinds of fault with AMDs energy efficient chips which have been available long before Intel's.
Looks to be Intel fanboys in denial.

Subject: Euro/Pound versus dollar I just don't get the people whining about this, or who apparently think "why not do it anyway just to help us lazy folks out?" even though they realize it is not an American site and most of their readership does not buy or sell in US dollars.
Obviously they are ignoring VAT, and must not pay attention to the stories about how some US vendors really screw over you poor Brits and mainlanders, it isn't straight exchange rate. What is the converted to dollars price for Vista Ultimate over there, something like $700? How much does the Xbox 360 and PS3 cost you again?
Point is, you can't just plug in the exchange rate and expect it to reflect reality. But if you must, here's a hint, type in "euro" in google and it'll tell you the current rate. If you type in "british pound" it'll do the same. Ditto for "australian dollar", "canadian dollar", "yen" and any other major currency you may care about. Is it really too much to ask of readers who really care that they take an extra two seconds to do that?
And if they are too dense to do the calculations for themselves, note that you can also type in something like "3 billion yen" and it'll tell you that's 25.9965338 million US dollars. I can only assume it is discrimination from the "do no evil" Google that this doesn't give prices in pounds when I do it on www.google.co.uk!

Subject: Why the INQ is so good, bad or ugly "My Porsche is more Porsche than your Porsche."
Porsche is a nice car. Still, get a life.
Maybe you should direct these messages to forum? This "flame wars" take too much space in the news-section.
Let me add another opinion. I do like the INQ and its posts/news and from time to time notice some verbal humour. I like verbal humour, even when I produce it.
But please, do check the spelling before sending posts. I know not all the hacks are native english speakers, but this is my primary english news source. Therefore I appreciate correct spelling. Hope I didn't make too many misspells.

Subject: Voles and Punters
I have been reading The Inquirer for many months now and I can't seem to figure out what is meant by voles and punters.
As far as I know a vole is a rodent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Vole). As for a punter. I'm not sure which term is implied (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punter).
Could you please clear this up for us here in United States who are not familiar with this slang? Thank you.

ciao Subject: Why the INQ is so good vs. not so good.
Sometimes I get a kick out of other people's comments just because of its utmost sincerity and honesty when sending letters. lol.
People are stupid.. and by stupid I mean they lack the ability to understand the basics of moral ethics, self-awareness of their own behavior, of their own mentality, of how they impact people, of how they impact the environment, any form of self-understanding, properly balanced judgement, conflict, the deeper creed beyond conflict, their function/role/purpose/lives, or anything for that matter.

Yes, I agree, a daft mod indeed. In addition, it looks like maths is not one of the writer's strong points.

Our USB gourmet writes:
"30 USB connections can produce something around 500W, enough power to cook ;-)"
Actually, USB is specified to provide 0.5A at about 5V. That's around 75W for 30 USB connections. Way short of 500W.
I always love when people make "witty" comments about things they know jackshit about.
I hope the fella actually ate what he cooked.

Subject: Too much "America's Army" for the police
In responce to your recap (ouch bad pun) story "Man suspected of pinching a PS3 shot dead by cops" I think we need to get someone onto that terrible situation right away. Someone that knows that cops can't go around training with bloody shooting games like "America's Army" which is admitedly used to turn normal human beings into lawful killing machines. I think this calls for Jack Thompson.
But wait, he's a retardican\\\\ republican, he doesn't care if someone is shot in gang-buster style by the boys in blue (or desert fatigues). I guess it's all about the uniform.
