Microsoft invents Global Anti Piracy Day

Shiver your timbers
Tue Oct 21 2008, 12:13

THE REDMOND MASSIVE has announced that today is Global Anti Piracy Day. So if you haven't sent out your Anti Pirate Day cards yet, you may be too late. Aunt Maude will be so upset.

We can't see it catching on in the same way as Mother's Day, but the new launch will include both "education initiatives" and "enforcement actions" in 49 countries on six continents to combat the illegal trade in dodgy Voleware.

The Vole says software piracy and counterfeiting is a sophisticated, global trade with a damaging impact on consumers, businesses and economies. "Microsoft is committed to working with others around the world to stay a step ahead of this illegal industry,” said Volish Ship's Captain David Finn.

“We are working to identify international connection points between software pirates and counterfeiters, to help stop them in their tracks and protect consumers and legitimate businesses from this illegal trade,” he warned. µ

M$ make piracy easier

I had a party a few weeks ago that got quite rowdy. Somehow my beloved PC got drowned in water and fried the motherboard. I took the opportunity to upgrade the motherboard, processor and RAM.

When I switched her back on, my problems began. Windows recognised that the computer had changed, and told me that it needed to be validated within 3 days. Since my network card was on the new motherboard I needed to install a new driver, so clicked through intending to activate it later.

The computer wouldn't fully boot, and crashed just before hitting the desktop. No problem I thought, and booted in to safe mode to remove whatever was causing the crash. I couldn't get in to safe mode without activating, but couldn't activate without booting normally.

I then had to call the activation line (free phone, fortunately), spent 20 minutes typing in my GENUINE product key, only to be told that I had exceeded the number of activations and I had to ring another number to prove that the copy of XP I have had (and paid through the nose for) for years is legit.

I did eventually jump through the 1000's of hoops the M$ put in my way, but it would have been a hell of a lot easier to just use an activation crack!!! I wonder how I would stand legally if I was using a genuine product key, but bypassed the activation because it's a pain in the a-hole???

"a damaging impact on consumers, businesses and economies"

The most damaging thing for companies and economies is the lost downtime due to shoddy MS products based on shoddy business decisions.
Like the decision to continuously change the bloody file format between versions of Word or Excel, making new files unreadable by older versions and sometimes older files unreadable by new versions.
MS takes the cake in every single instance of business downtime whether it is due to regular patching of servers and clients, abrupt crashes, OS locking when the frikkin' Explorer is waiting on the network (yes it still happens) or various Office inanities.
Microsoft is an impediment in the business world and should be removed.
I should know : I've been working with it for 15 years.

No doubt it will be the day that all M$ products either BSOD or display the message that the software is Pirated and you need to go buy a new version!.

Scientology spin out of copyright

When I hear a great movie, tv show, video game, or music has just been released, I just know I can help!!

As a scientologist, we understand the daemons that inhabit most people and can help them free themselves from what would otherwise be an eternal affliction.

So here goes.

If one person buys one copy in this entire world then we can all be assured that the producers have been paid. Who says more than one copy must be purchased. One copy will do for all.

See I just knew I could help...Just knew it knew it knew it.

OK now we can go back to reading reviews of hardware and watered down press releases we care nothing about...

Hypocrites

So, ah, now that M$ is speaking out against piracy, how did it plan to get a foothold in most third world countries again?

I assume that means writing a quality, speedy, secure OS with a low resource footprint, sold at low cost? Cos it's been piracy that's got windows so widespread in these countries so far. And as M$ is so principled, it's going to stop all that, get off its arse and write something decent?

Nah. Double standards with this lot as ever. Back to Ubuntu for me then.

Facade

It is in Microsoft's best interests that people continue to pirate it's software.
Make the home users pirate it, get hooked on it, then when they get into a corporation they will use what they know.

Microsoft has the means to make pirating a hell of a lot more difficult (TPM/Bitlocker/Online auth)
yet they must stay away from 0% pirating as it would hurt them a lot more than help them.

Improved Software is Still Offical?

Chrome improves nice simple look with good response, though Google story might do with Harange' about Favorites only on opening page & how microsoft has NO Favorites in Ultimate as Time Wears on, Its just too narrow, Shrunken. Maybe Hencho'd En Brazilia by favorites bar shrinkers.

Yet, Pirates is something Kidnapped I Know & like Patty Hearst, Often keeps secret Pirate Flags in Bedroom. So Ultee' Too Covets brazen & Clever, Especially if they could fix IE8 Beta Favorites popdown SideBar Shrinkage problem that ages in with Vista, Like Glaucoma , excepting its total lack of space after time question & so icons & letters are locked out of dis-play.
Microsoft spends too much time worrying about possible geniousess whom code than doing code in straightforward useful way. cloud hardware could help.
SSD could make cloud into hurricane, so Good & Good for pirates out on that Date. By the Peepers, we see Graphics are moving onboard processor from intel & continue to see Larrabee white pappering two way cache crossbar, step ahead of barcelona, so will intel mobile, Mr. Chandlerdrashekken ever have ability to incorporate two way cache crossbar in cpu? Which timeline might have any HighTemp cpu with working twoway crossbar within cache to give wonderful cloud effect, making speed transistors barc dream, doublers often resting 1/2 bank for better clouding pereformances, that 2 way cache crossbar would power out modules & Up ready response/increase Ultimate Total while in still staggered & in sleepy ways.BIGGER IS BETTER & Overly restricking All Pirates is just as piratanical, at least in software.

Pirate Crossbar drashek here within Pirates lair. or grotto king STeWie.

Pricey software

Within the first week that spore was released, it was downloaded 500,000 times, that is $2,500,000 in lost business, but the dollar has lost it's value so I guess that isn't that much anymore...

ANYWAY, I want to buy music to support the artist, not the label. On that note, I want to buy a game to support the developers to make better games, not to make EA tons of money at the consumers expense. I am sure there are tons of people who feel the same way

A perfect opportunity

Why don't all the Linux Distros band together and deem today "Anti Proprietary OS Day" in conjuction? The motto could be "Hey, Microsoft doesn't want you, come to us. We won't ask what's in your wallet."

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
