AN INDIAN chess player will be banned from international competition for a decade after he was caught using his mobile phone's Bluetooth device to win games.

According to ESPN, Umakant Sharma, had shot up the ladder of the game's international rankings over the last 18 months and qualified for the national championships. The normally slow moving ladder of chess masters rarely has such fast moving rising stars so officials were a little suspicious.

Officials decided that it was a little odd that Sharma always wore a cloth cap when he played his games and decided to have a look at the item.

Sure enough inside the cap they found a Bluetooth headset which Sharma used to chat to his accomplices, who used a computer to relay moves to him.

There is a lot of money flowing around the international chess scene. Recently the Bulgarian team came back from an international match in Russia complaining that their rivals took a few too many loo breaks.

They discovered a computer connection in the loo but were prevented from making a complaint by the Russian players' 'minders' who were sporting that fashionable Russian mafia look.
