The MPAA commissioned the report from LEK Consulting two years ago but were gutted when the report revealed that dispite the industry's efforts to crack down on piracy the situation has got much worse.
Hacks from the Wall Street Journal heard of the report and have asked for some of the details. It turns out that Hollywood is losing about $6.1 billion annually in global wholesale revenue to piracy, about 75 per cent more than previous estimated losses of $3.5 billion in hard goods.
The report has split the MPAA. Some think that it should be released because it shows that Hollywood needs political help, but others think that such a report will damage their stock prices and make a laughing stock of its enforcement efforts.
In the end it was the nay sayers who won.
