GENERAL ELECTRIC said today that it's ready to start moving into its China headquarters in Shanghai's Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.

GE's China Technology Park complex of offices is an expansion of its former China research center that covers over 60,000 square meters. When completed it will eventually house more than 3,000 employees of the company's Chinese business groups.

Jeffrey R Immelt, chairman and CEO of GE, said at an opening ceremony that GE will foster research and development in China. No doubt it also plans to do some business in China too, as Immelt also said that GE's Shanghai headquarters will be the focus of its Chinese product lines' localisation efforts.

US-based industrial conglomerate General Electric is one of the world's largest diversified technology manufacturers, with 2007 revenues of over $172 billion and more than 320,000 employees. It makes everything from home appliances to jet engines and nuclear reactors. ยต

GE has had a major presence in China for at least a decade. I have too coworkers who were GE employees that spent several years each in China that long ago.
