MAJOR TAIWANESE CHIP FIRMS are planning to build a total of 20 300mm fabrication plants in the run up to 2010.

The Taiwan Economic News cuts the cake this way. Nanya - a sub of Formosa Plastics - will build four; Inotera expects to build another fab after it's finished building its current one; Winbond is planning another 300mm fab.

Promos is going fab mad and building four more, the newspaper claimed.

Inotera is an affiliate of Promos.

Powerchip currently has two fabs running and anticipates 70,000 wafer starts in the first quarter of next year. It plans to build another four, according to the report.

We make that several fabs short of the 20, however.
