Green datacentres are pie in the sky

Hated by the chairmen of the bored

TECHIES MIGHT fantasise about green data centres, but they’ll never turn their dreams into reality. That's because hard headed board members of corporations like green IT but they simply won’t buy it.

While CIOs might set the green agenda, it’s doomed to be amended to a cut-price version, if the study by storage outfit Omstor is accurate.

It finds that half of all green computing trends are driven by CIOs, but over 60 per cent of companies don’t plan to act on any eco-friendly initiative. It’s all just talk. And sometimes not even that, as some some boards won’t even discuss the subject – according to the study.

The key findings of the ONStor research indicated that:

Half (well 48%) of European companies expect their data centre to grow. But not organically, because though most (58%) are already out of space, power and cooling capacity. Only one in three has any green initiative in place. Three in ten say there are no discussions about it at all.

Bob Miller, CEO at storage outfit ONStor, is mortified. “Green initiatives are sweeping the IT industry. Pressure groups like Green Grid are taking centre stage in an industry known for its power consumption. We’re taking this seriously but the end user community is some way behind." µ
