Sun reckons virtualisation is confusing

People want it and don't even know what it is
Tuesday, 18 December 2007, 09:05

MOST MANAGERS screaming for virtualisation have not got a clue what it actually means, according to Sun's storage expert.

John Fowler told Network World that punters were falling over themselves to talk to him about virtualisation technology. It seems that they have read a magazine in a doctor's waiting room, did not quite understand it, but think it might be an electronic cure for cancer.

Fowler said that one of the difficulties for such people is developing a virtualisation plan. This apparently causes them huge problems because they do not know what it is and could be designing a chocolate cake for all they knew.

He said such punters are confused by virtualisation, they don't know how to do it, what does and the real values of it.

However Fowler said that virtualisation was not over hyped as it has been around on Unix and mainframes since Spinola was a boy.

But now it is on the x86 it is practically in the Mail on Sunday colour supplements. Particular as it promises energy efficiency. µ

No surprise there

This is no news for me, I've been in IT consulting for a while and I could safely say that at least 80% of my clients do not have a clue about virtualisation and why they do or do not need it. Its all a consequence of peter's principle and trying to push skilled techies out of decision making roles. Serves them right.
The funniees thing I ever had to do was explain to them why they cannot stress test an application on a vmware session. They are all into virtualisation, but their minds are still stuck in monolithic server configuration.

And virtualisation is...

And after reading this article I (you) still have no idea what a hell this virtualisation is.

Thank you for nothing ;)

no need to die dumb!

It would have been probably a bit too daring to explain the big V in an INQ article, though.

That's what Whackypedia ist for:
