Hallo,
just would like to share a piece of my mind. The article is taken from Hilbert Hagedoorn's mini Q&A with Derek Perez, Nvidia's director of PR, from this link:
http://www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php?id=4199"
I think this is what Derek "i'm so direct to the point" really meant:
> How does NVIDIA look against that situation?
Today's news about the acquisition of ATI by AMD is a positive development for NVIDIA. We are now the only graphics processor and core logic company that supports both Intel and AMD processors. We will continue to execute on our strategy, which is to develop industry-changing GPU and platform technologies, extend the use of the GPU into new applications, and expand its reach into all computing devices - from PCs to servers to phones.
translation: Of course we are freakin' worried sick of this merger i cant even sleep well at night!
> What long-term effect will this have?
Our PC strategy is to be the leading innovator of GPU and core logic for both Intel and AMD platforms. GeForce is the #1 GPU brand. Quadro is the #1 professional and workstation graphics brand. nForce the #1 core logic brand. And SLI is the #1 multi-GPU brand. They are specifically sought out by end users of both Intel and AMD processors. Today's announcement only enhances our strategy.
translation: How the hell am i supposed to know??? Do i look like a fortune teller to you??? Nitwit...
> Why do you think ATI went for this? It's financial status?
GeForce has taken 80% of the performance market. Quadro is over 80% of the workstation market. We are taking share at OEMs. We are taking share in notebook. ATI needs to explore strategic options.
translation: Hellooo are you born yesterday? Of course it's because they're tired of eating our gpu dust! Asians are just plain better engineers than Canadians.
> I don't believe so, but can we expect something in the likings of NVIDIA/Intel.
Our strategy is to be an independent supplier of GPUs and MCPs for the PC market.[/quote] translation: [i]of course we are! we are currently assessing how much capital we need to raise in order to acquire intel.

Subject: Dell battery woes
Hi Charlie,
Working on weekend? As you are the Inq's leading battery explosion expert, I have a question for you.
Last time a fire brigade was called to the exploding laptop. What if the same happens halfway between London and New York?
Have you tried to contact any airlines over this? Are they aware of this possibility?
What would be their course of action if the laptop explodes: 1) While being used by the passenger. 2) While being stored in the luggage bin 3) While being transported in the cargo hold.
Recalling the unfortunate Swissair crash http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/03/27/world/main546355.shtml allegedly caused by a spark in the entertainment system wiring, a blast caused by a failed laptop battery, however rare, seems to be a rather terrifying prospect.
Want to dig into this and bring us all some enlightement?
Thank you,
Ondrej
Subject: Vodafone rebels want Erskine
Dear INQ,
Just reading the article and thought I'd give you a perspective from a Vodafone staff member.
I'm currently involved with the HSDPA rollout, which I'm informed will be our only broadband offering. This is foolhardy, mainly for the reason that most of our 3G sites only have a 2 Mbit/s backhaul link to the switches.
Since HSDPA will download at 1.5 Mbit/s, you can't even get two users on most sites at full speed.
We're implementing our own microwave network that'll increase capacity, but that project is running very slowly and the most a Ericsson base station will take is 8 x 2Mbit/s (16 Mbit/s).
So in heavily subscribed areas there's no way we can compete with cable/ADSL offerings.
That's pretty much it and since it's counter-productive to internal policy I'd better not give my name.

Subject: Spellcheck firm misspells new release
Dear Tony,
Pat Brink here, the PR guy that goofed on the release for TextTrust.
Unfortunately, the misspelling was not a publicity stunt, I simply goofed. (People that know me, like my wife, will verify that I do make mistakes.)
However, the company did receive a record number of visits to its web site in the 24 hours following my mistake.
I really wish I had been smart enough to make an intentional spelling error on the release.
Pat Brink,

Tony Dennis replies: Don't I remember Alice Cooper being asked if he really did bite the heads off chickens on stage?
His reply was something like: "Bite the heads off chickens? Wow, I'm not going to deny that. In fact, it'll be in my next set!" µ
