GameBoy goes wireless

Tube train nightmare
Sat Sep 27 2003, 23:51
NINTENDO has chosen to slip a Motorola chip into its Game Boys in order to allow wireless gaming between clusters of handsets.

The Motorola 32-bit RISC chipset pumps out the vibes at a 2.4GHz radio frequency to enable up to five players to hook themsleves up and duff each other up wirelessly, the companies said today in a statement.

Just the vision of it, on a late-night London tube is enough to give one the heebie-jeebies. But then, hey, maybe one day all duels will be settled this way. Hand helds at twenty paces, fellas...

Anyhow, Motorola says its technology is based on a TDMA (time division multiple access) system, operating in the 'globally available' 2.4GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical Band spectrum. It says an adapter to fit the Gameboy Advance will ship with the new games, "Pokemon FireRed" and "Pokemon LeafGreen", launched in Japan first half of 2004

A Nintendo spokesman said the technology "enabled us to develop a new wireless game system." ยต
