Yahoo swats at lottery spammers

Invisible opponents

MICROSOFT'S CHUM YAHOO has sued a group of unknown lottery spammers, even if it is highly unlikely the miscreants responsible will ever be in court.

Lottery spammers send you emails saying that you have won some kind of prize or lottery winnings from Yahoo.

The suit claims trademark infringement and breaking the Federal CAN-SPAM Act, and related state laws.

Yahoo does not run any lotteries or contests, other than the one involving winding up Microsoft over share deals.

Most of the emails attempt to trick their recipients into handing over personal data like passwords, credit card information and Social Security numbers. Other times winners are duped into paying shipping and processing fees for their 'prizes'.

Yahoo lawyers are hoping that a court order will help their discover who is behind the scams. It might be tilting at windmills but we guess it is difficult to do anything else and impossible to do nothing. µ

Duped? <LOL>

"Other times winners are duped into paying shipping and processing fees for their 'prizes'"

Don't you mean;

Other times winners are STUPID ENOUGH to pay shipping and processing fees for their 'prizes'.

Lets face it, anyone who gambles and thinks that they can win is a gullible moron who's primary skill is one of self delusion.

To believe that someone will just hand them a prize for a competition they never even entered is beyond stupid and into vegetable status.
