Software giant Citrix reacts to increased mobility

SmoothRoaming added to Citrix release 3.0

REACTING TO THE realities of increased access to centralised data from mobile devices, Citrix has built a new facility into its MetaFrame Access Suite 3.0 called SmoothRoaming.

The problem was that as users wandered around with a device accessing a Citrix based system via Wi-Fi or GPRS, the link could drop out -sometimes for as little as a few seconds. Such incidents were described by Keith Turnbull, vp of product development with Citrix as 'micro-glitches'. Users could be totally unaware that they'd taken place. But in a worse case scenario, they might need to re-login and fire up their applications all over again.

With SmoothRoaming, that no longer happens. The screen merely freezes until the connexion is restored. Better still, the facility means you can log in from a completely different device and your 'old session' becomes immediately available.

The list of new features (which in some cases would be better labelled as fixed shortcomings) in Access Suite 3.0 is as long as your arm. However, for the biggest improvement will be 'on-demand licensing'. Basically it cuts out the time consuming task of installing licences for modules onto specific machines in a server farm. Now there's just one file for your whole Citrix system world-wide. "They'll be a lot of very pleased customers," Turnbull confessed. µ
