BIG GLUE said it will release its superfast Power6 server chip next month as we reported some weeks ago.

The outfit claims that the Power6 boasts twice the clock speed of the previous generation while consuming roughly the same amount of power.

The chip operates at 4.7 gigahertz makes Itanium 2 server processor which can only manage 1.66 gigahertz look like an centenarian tortoise towing a wheel barrow.

It also has 300 gigabytes per second bandwidth which the IBM press release can download of the entire iTunes music catalogue in a minute, if such an action is desirable.

Big Blue is planning the launch of a new server designed around it, although details of this have yet to be seen. µ
