Distributor claims huge boost in system builder share

What happened to misery? What about Dell?
Tue Mar 09 2004, 12:29
LAST TIME we met a gaggle of system builders in Sitges, near Barcelona, they were very glum indeed.

Some had their heads in their hands, and explained to us that there was just no way they could compete against God Almighty, also known as Dell.

Others rocked slowly backwards and forwards, and that was before they went to the party and got wrecked.

A few gazed into the middle distance, as though wishing they were selling fruit and veg rather than pesky PCs.

Keith Warburton was happy enough mind you. He looks after the Personal Computer Association.

Yet things can't be all bad. Because we hear today from Computer 2000, a wing of Tech Data, that it has grown sales to its system builder base by a staggering 20 per cent in the last six months.

Sales of components rose by 10% in January 2004 compared to January 2003, and C2000 is flogging products to over 2,400 system builders and resellers in Blighty.

Wow. Where are all these dealers hiding?

C2000 is happy with sales of Intel and Kingston prods, and has added A Open, Benq, GNR and PNY to its portfolio.

We haven't heard from Sukh Rayat at Avnet for a good old while. Hope he's OK. µ

Do you think the move was justified?
