Figures from Point Topic Research (PTR) show that in the second part of the year the average worldwide price for DSL entry-level services fell by 9.3 per cent.
This is the biggest price cut in DSL services in almost four years. PTR said that prices have been falling gently over the last year or so, but the sudden drop is significant.
PTL got its figures by checking the global broadband tariff benchmarks which tracks 18 DSL operators from around the world.
Some broadband operators have cut prices by half and others have offered big upgrades in entry-level speeds.
Cable connections have also dropped in price, but not as fast, the report says. Currently a cable connection is on average $4.27 per month more expensive than DSL.
