Sony spinner: "PS3 better than nothing"

Sony's woes are just bad press
Tue Nov 07 2006, 09:17
THE NEW DIRECTOR of corporate communications for Sony says that the outfit's PS3 woes are just some naughty press trying to find chinks in the company's armour.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Dave Karraker said the Playstation was so popular that people were always trying to find fault with it. He said there has been a lot of negativity around Sony recently just because people have such high expectations for the system.

His spin on the PS3's problems is that they are apparently all due to it being the number one in the market. He said it was not interesting to the press if something succeeds. You don't sell magazines or blogs by saying Sony's great all the time and punters want to see that maybe there are some chinks in the armour, he said.

When it comes down to it, faced with a choice between nothing and a PS3, punters will always opt for the PS3, Karraker sagely told Gamasutra.

Karraker is no stranger to handling poisoned chalices. He looked after Martha Stewart while she was doing porridge.

He admits that most of Sony's problems stem from the fact it had allowed the media to drive the message and interpret it for the console maker. Hacks were saying bad things about the PS3 and there was no counter message from Sony.

Of course, the delays to the PS3, the fact that it is more expensive than other consoles, and Sony's reliability has taken a battering because of its exploding batteries crisis had nothing to do with it.

Karraker said that Sony was no longer going to allow the media to say what it liked and is going to position the PS3 properly. µ
