Neurons at danger from mobile phones

It's tough being rattus norvegicus

IT'S A TOUGH LIFE being a rat.

The good old days of being pumped full of fizzy drinks or LSD are now over. If you're a rat living in Lund, Sweden then you've probably been subjected to hours and hours of electromagnetic radiation by researchers working at Lund University hospital.

A bit like being exposed to endless "Darling I'm on the train" calls.

These folks are trying to discover what possible side-effects there might be from over usage of a mobile phone. They probably picked the 1800 MHz frequency used by UK operators like Orange, Virgin and T-Mobile for the tests.

For once this particular band of scientists weren't out to prove that mobile phones can cause cancer. Instead they were looking for nerve damage and concluded that there was 'highly significant' evidence that the rats involved suffered damaged neurons in their brains.

Of course if you repeatedly perform the same task, you always stand a chance of harming yourself. Look at all those humans experimenting with mice.

Many developed RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) as a result. The jury's still out over the dangers from mobile phones but that won't stop scientists from searching for them. Think of the fame if you could prove it! µ
