Intel does u-turn, disses AMD officially

And IBM says Itanium doesn't "have what it takes"

Don't knock the competition. It's one thing to say our product is superior to our competitor's, or to position the competitor in a lower class of application. It is another to say that our competitor has done a lousy job. We want to take the 'higher ground' - from Intel's guide to the European Press

AN ARTICLE in today's Financial Times by Tom Foremski has quoted the head of IBM Server Systems as saying the Itanium is doomed at the high end.

And in the piece, which discusses how AMD's Opteron will do, Intel has taken the remarkable step of predicting the failure of the processor.

Normally, Intel refuses to comment on competitors' products, almost as a religious duty.

But the FT quotes a representative as saying the Opteron hasn't been properly evaluated and lacks software and tools that new CPUs require.

It also quotes the CEO of an unnamed enterprise software firm as saying Itanium is a very difficult port, which somewhat contradicts Intel's official view of the Opteron.
