Boxed AMD chips now cheaper than trays

THE LATEST PRICES distributors are quoting system integrators confirms a sea-change in AMD's plans and shows that boxed systems - complete with fans and the like - are cheaper than tray CPUs, which should theoretically be far less expensive.

Sources close to AMD have provided us with price changes today which show the extent of the shift, as the firm prepares to move to a new process.

Note - the figures below are distributor prices - when you buy chips in retail outlets, an additional piece of margin will be added, depending on what the buyer and the vendor can bear.

Intel has to do this sort of thing too, when it changes sockets, speeds, and the like:
