IPhone fanboys still love the thing

Despite flaws
Monday, 1 September 2008, 09:59

APPLE SEEMS TO BE DOING no wrong with its legions of fanboys despite serving up an Iphone and then later an Iphone 3G that was beset with problems.

Now Cnet has penned an article wondering why fanboys are so loyal to the product when it is pants.

For those that came in late, the 2G version of the phone was expensive. Those who bought it lost hundreds of dollars when Steve Jobs decided to drop the price overnight. It also suffered from the occasional problem of catching fire.

The 3G version was cheaper. That caught fire and was marred by bugs, spotty service, disappearing programs for the device and a veil of secrecy over software developers trying to work on it.

Confused CNet wondered how, whilst the Iphone griping rages online, Apple's reputation is coming through it.

Peter Fader, a marketing professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, said that the company's loyal fans and even casual users have come to identify so strongly with Apple's image that they will turn a blind eye.

He said that Apple was lucky that it had an iconic status where anything it does, even if it is mediocre, will automatically have a halo around it.

Baba Shiv, a professor of marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, told Cnet that Apple's fans play down negative information to explain their relationship to the brand... and justify spending more for products that may not be better than the competition's.

Once people are that dumb, it is really hard to get them to change their minds about a product or company.

Ask yourself how many companies could actually sell a product with known flaws, such as the iPhone 3G and get away with it. µ

iPhone not alone, but in focus

I think Apple made some serious mistakes, like not allowing vertical keyboard in all apps and no bluetooth music profile, but remember that as Apple is in focus it also gets most attention to problems. I recently bought a Nokia E71, my first Nokia and my first Symbian S60 and while I love the hardware I find the software and GUI a big joke. But I can't find any real complaints from users, they just "get used to it" I guess. I find most hardware today to be very flawed, tons of bugs, the tolerance is just higher....

A bit unfair

Calling people stupid because they happen to like a product is a bit off. The fact is that even with flaws the iPhone is still the best smartphone out there. The others can have all the bells and whistles and specs they like but unless they are easy to use day to day and do it well they won't do as well as the iphone.

The fact is that no phone plays music and video and does web browsing as well as the iPhone. Making calls is a given and I have never had a problem with calls either.

I have used many Windows Mobile devices as well as high end phones from Nokia and they all suffer from the same problem, they are fiddly to use and you soon stop using a lot of the features because you can't be bothered with the crazy interfaces.

The iPhone does what it does really really well - that is why it sells not because of some blinkered view of Apple.

I love all sorts of different technologies from all sorts of vendors. It is just when you balance out the pros and cons of smartphones, the iPhone comes out top because it is something I will actually use day in day out.

I'm quite happy with my iPhone

Having had a string of sluggish Windows Mobile devices that crashed all the time and needed constant rebooting I've been rather pleased with my iPhone.

The browser is quick and smooth and works a lot better than Pocket IE, plus the iPhone finds and connects to WiFi, 3G or EDGE seamlessly. With Windows Mobile it seems to store every Wi-Fi network it sees, meaning I have to go in and clear out the list of dozens of APs that it's noticed otherwise it slows to a crawl trying to find all the networks.

The email, YouTube, Google Maps and video playback are all good on the iPhone as well. I've not had a Nokia for a while, so I don't know how they're doing but from what I've read about the browser it's not as good as Safari. I suppose it depends what you want from a phone, for me I wanted decent web browsing and the iPhone definitely delivers that for the most part.

I'm no Apple fanboy (although they all say that!) I wouldn't want to use OS X on the desktop if you paid me and the iPhone has quite a few short comings (short battery life, only 16GB of space, on-screen keyboard sucks, no Flash support), but all in all I've been very pleased with it.

I think my biggest complaint would be O2's crap network which has crap 3G coverage...

This would be the same Nick Farrell

who put down £150 and signed an 18 month contract for a 3G modem that you can now buy for £50 on Pay as You Go? How dumb can you get?
What Nick fails miserably to realise is that all smart phones have bugs and flaws. Those of the iPhone are no worse than the competition, and the software is for the most part extemely usable. Battery life is only an issue because people are using it a lot (if it was pants and unusable then people wouldn't use it, would they?) and 3G batery life was something that was warned about. Could it be made better? Shure it could. Has anyone else got anything better? Not that I've found yet.

Another unbiased iphone article

Can't say I am surprised here, yet another decidedly biased article.

Anyway, I have the iphone 3g as well. Been using HTC smartphones for the last 4 years and tbh none of them have been as stable as the iphone 3g so far for me.

No MMS support - no problem for me, never use it.
Naff battery life - yup that is does bug me at times but manageable.

App support - sorry, but the amongst the legion of approved apps there is definately some gems in there, more than I can say for anything much that has come out of the windows platforms for the past few years.

Safari browsing - This alone is a winner for me, being able to surf over 3g to any site without having to fiddle around the page or find some mobile variant that may fit my screen size.

Also found the hardware to be a great deal more sturdy so far than anything I got from previous HTC smartphones. That includes almost literally drowning it and it taking a few tumbles from a pretty reasonable height onto concrete.

Wouldn't touch anything else Apple but so far this little piece of tech has suited me pretty well and will probably do pretty well in another generation due to its "it just works" approach.

Fanboiz

I think the blithering I LOVE MY IPHONE comments just proved your point! Blind devotion in the face of all evidence to the contrary. Come on, admit it fanboiz, you've been suckered and your toy isn't what you were promised or what you expected.

Hahahaha!

Seriously I love these articles. Not because of the article itself but rather the legion of apple fanboys/girls that always post their usual tosh.

In this case they helped to prove a point. Apple fans are merely sheep.

Cool factor

If it is cool to own something then value and quality do not matter.

I have quite a few friends and acquaintances that own VW vehicles. In Canada these are also cool. All of them are Mac owners. I am not sure about their repair bills, but they pay more for their cars, and they produce a lot of black smoke from their exhaust.

I have also noticed that Apple and VW advertising campaigns have a lot in common.

iPhone is ahead because it is Best, not because of loyalty

You guys are missing the point. It itsn’t loyalty. The reason the iPhone 3G sells is because it is a superior piece of technology. I have used other cell phones and none compare. Here's how it is better than anything else out there - by a mile.

1. Interface. Superior user interface with excellent built in apps.
2. iPod. It's an iPod.
3. Browser. The internet browsing experience is second to none. In fact, for my money there isn't even a second. Other cell phones are universally bad in this regard. That's why cell phone usage of the net was zip - until the iPhone.
4. App Store. The 2500 or so applications along with the iTunes ecosystem make for an unbelievably lush third party environment in which to enhance and extend your iPhone.
5. Network. 3G is working fine in most countries of the world, except in the inner cities of the U.S. where unprecedented demand is causing connection problems for a small percentage of users. Until ATT can build more towers, you can use the EDGE or WIFI networks in the inner cities. The recent 3G connection problems were almost exclusively due to the immaturity of ATT's network. How do we know this? Just look at the connection speeds and experience in other countries. In fact, Apple recently helped ATT by dialing down their (normal) power requests from the cell phone networks. This will get better, folks.

So, why is the iPhone so much better? It's a great phone, an iPod, a phenomenal browser, and a computer with third-party applications. No other phone can say that. End of story, or I should say, just the beginning

Not about intelligence

What gets me is that has some very clear and successful people wrapped around it's blinger. No matter what argument I come up with why I don't want one, I am sure to get one person say, "but it does look good doesn't it!"

posted by : Mahou Saru, 01 September 2008 Complain about this comment
Not quite so

The flaws are only in a negligibly small percentage of the total. It is only hatebois like Nick Farell who blow out the problem out of proportion. Most user's didn't have any of the problems mentioned in the article, that is why they still like the product they got. The religion of Hateboism is growing out of jealousy and nothing more!

Fanboys

"Seriously I love these articles. Not because of the article itself but rather the legion of apple fanboys/girls that always post their usual tosh."

Actually I'm rather sick of being called a 'fanboy' by sites like The Inquirer and know-it-all tossers like you for, heaven-forbid, actually liking my iPhone.

It usually seems there's a bigger legion of posters pre-emptively calling anyone who defends the iPhone a fanboy. I find that rather pathetic and childish to be honest.

iPhone users still love the thing

So far so good... been a user for almost a week and I'm loving the kid.
Yes there's issues:

would love to turn off data access through cell service at my liking, being still able to make/receive calls (I believe there's an unofficial way to do just that)
tethering or phone-as-modem should be enabled from the start (there's a proxy app for that, again unnoficial)
voice dialling should also be enabled from the start since its the kind of app that must run in the background and interface with headset, we'll have to wait a bit more for that I guess
GPS turn-by-turn is on its way it seams, so says TomTom

all in all... if its not here right now... it will be some time.

burning phones, lack of battery, getting clear network... didn't knock on this door so far...

very happy, happy user here.

this little bastid has so many little things... subtle things to make your life easier that they are easy to miss, you have to turn into a delicate whore to find them :P

after surgery you will feel better!

@John Manning

Nick thinks anyone who breathes the accursed name of Job's company should be boiled alive in their own blood. Ignore any article about Apple written by him.

Nothing wrong with loyalty

What's wrong with being loyal to a product. Every product has some flaws. That doesn't mean you abandon it. If you went to a high school and the football team sucks, I don't think you should switch schools or walk around with a T-shirt saying "Disband the football team."
My father always liked the New York Mets no matter how bad the early teams were. Maybe it doesn't make sense, but that's just the way some humans are. They find something they like about a team, a girl, or a product and they just protect it through thick and thin. Some people like three-legged mutts. Go figure.

IPhone

Hilarious !! - this guy called nICK can't even spell iPhone and he calls ME stupid !!. In nICKS little mind/world, somehow stupid sheep earn enough money to buy higher quality,( see various consumer reports)easier to use,(see various usability and ergonomic studies) products.
( Nickie, might want to look up those studies of the education and income levels of Mac users (WIRED mag published one of the studies)before you start clarifying what people are already sure of. You ARE trolling aren't you? Still believe that you compare products by using a list of features? (your Lada is a better car than my Toyota because they have the same amount of wheels but your boot is bigger). If so, I have some property to sell you!!.
Never actually USED an iPhone or iPod touch yet, have you? ( that is,for more than 10 minutes). Low blow coming up folks - nICK probably believes that Vista is a SUPERB operating system ( ooh, that was low ).
Don't like touch keypads? - prefer a min keypad?
Fine ! Let you in on a secret. My old phone had a keypad. I tried the iPhones touch system. I LIKE it - a LOT more. Don't call me a "fanboy" because I made a personal decision different than yours.
The point you miss is that a lot of us already TRIED Windows Mobile, Nokia, Ericcson and like the way the Apple stuff works better. I think the word "sheep" might be better applied elsewhere...

Apple stumbled on some matters - and moved quickly to rectify them. The 3G range/quality bit has already suggested to be a problem of the networks, as different countries report great reception - but not not near large US cities. "Problem"phones test out fine in the labs- all of that has been all over the net for days- are you THAT out of date? - or do those niggly facts interfere with your little crusade? Bitter, bitter, nICK. Your religious zealotry is showing.

Tables are turning, and they're getting scared!

The real humor in this article is using "fanboy" to describe users of the iPhone and Apple. Not sure what decade the author is living in, but with 8 million iPhones and counting in the world, hundreds of millions of iPods, and a near 8 percent Mac OS market share, there's nothing "fanboy" about Apple at all anymore. I think the real "fanboy" is the author, and it sounds like he likes Windows. Times are changing, and tables are turning.

Jesus phone rules

I've gotta say, I really enjoy apple bashing that goes on at the inquirer and anyone that pays £1400 for what would cost you £350 for a pc is mental. But I bought a iphone the other day and it's brillaint. Havent had one problem, the browsing is great, half the time when Im at home I dont even need to load my pc anymore.

I havent had a problem with it and would completely recommend it too anyone. Only problem i have is like the last guy says, crappy 3G coverage from O2. Sean Bean needs to sort it out.

Brand Loyalty

"What's wrong with being loyal to a product. Every product has some flaws. That doesn't mean you abandon it."

That's not the article is saying. It's talking about brand loyalty. It's saying that despite a company treating you badly or stiffing you on price, you keep coming back.

Now, there's always some sensible tolerance in these things. You get 1 average meal at your favourite restaurant, and you'll probably not abandon them, but after 2 or 3 average meals in a row, you'd probably consider going elsewhere next time.

Track down the CNN article. If Dell or Lenovo had given me the products one guy had received, I'd be away from them for years.

right on the money

This article says it all. It's true. The comments here proves it. The fanboys here thought that iphone is the best when it comes to music and video and web surfing without knowing that other phones are better! ( stupid... very well said) Do you research fanboys! get out of you apple world of illusions haha! steve job religion worshippers...
