The weapons of mass distraction - UK minister Jack Straw, obviously distracted
THE GLORIOUS search empire, upon which the sun never sets, Google, has splashed out on its own fighter jet.
The outfit has bought a 1982 light attack Dornier Alpha Jet, which was a Franco-German project for those who see global domination in a more literal way. The plane was designed for training and light attack. Ironically the Nigerian airforce have 24 of the beasts which can be obtained if you send $10,000 to an Internet based bank account.
Page and Brin must have been impressed by the firepower. The Alpha's come with two Matra rocket pods which contain 18 SNEB 68 mm rockets each, and two CRV7 rocket pods with 19× 70 mm rockets each. They can also have two AIM-9 Sidewinders and carry 2,500 kg of bombs. Despite the title, we doubt that the Mauser Bk-27 cannon is much good at shooting mice.
The jet will be parked at Moffett Field, owned by the NASA Ames Research Centre, where there has been a bit of a row over Page and Brin parking their own jets on the site.
The Dornier Alpha Jet can be modified by NASA for its own experiments and so there is less of a problem fitting the Google jet into the space agencies rules.
Of course it would be jolly useful if Google did launch a very hostile take-over of Microsoft. We have visions of Steve Ballmer climbing to the top of the Space Needle in Seatle bellowing "Developers, Developers, Developers", while being straffed by Brin and Serge's Google airforce [You need help Farrell. Ed]. µ

Franco-German.
Only $10,000 for an Alpha Jet?! I know it's not exactly an F-22, but still! At this price I might actually consider buying one...
The link you posted has a space in the middle and so does not link to the story properly.

The proper link should be http://www.universetoday.com/2008/10/24/google-founders-buy-fighter-jet-to-help-nasa/
the author was making a joke, Nigeria is very well known for its internet even snail mail cons.
Send your 10k for a 10 million dollar jet and you'll get exactly what you deserve, you'll get robbed.
Alexko, you need to learn to sniff out sarcasm.

The author is lambasting the Nigerian Scam.
