Fring is spreading

Now available on the Iphone
Wednesday, 8 October 2008, 11:04

YESTERDAY SAW THE birth of Fring the latest Iphone application enabling talk and chat with other 'fringsters' through a number of popular online communities including Skype, MSN, Google Talk and Twitter in a single interface through the Iphone Internet connection.

alt='fring' alt='fring'

Both Iphone and Ipod touch owners will now have the opportunity to talk to the millions of Fring users worldwide.

The software allows instant messaging regardless of the device their buddy is using, whether it be a PC or another non-fruity flavour of smart phone.

When the user logs in the contact list will appear, and like on most of these applications, will let the user know the status of their friends whether they be online, busy or away.

Fringsters can also make reasonably cheap Wi-Fi calls whilst also using either regular calls, SkypeOut or SIP calls.

Fring, which is available as a free download from the App Store through Itunes, was originally launched in 2007 but has been rapidly growing since the beginning of this year. ยต

No 3G !

Unfortunately due to the Apple arrangement with AT&T this release has been crippled with no 3G VOIP support.

What about us international non AT&T users!

frint on iphone

I looked at my skype credits. I guess when you make calls on fring you are charged skype credit, even if you have the unlimited north america plan. ($3/month)

So only use fring w/skype if you are making long distant calls on your cell, or if you ran out of time on the cell.

calls in $cad
skype charges 2.4cents per min + 5.9 cents connection fee. Per min means not by the second, so a 1:30 call will cost 10.7 cents, 20mins call costs 53.9 cents.

calls if $US.
For us: 2.1cents per min + 3.9 cents connection fee, so a 1:30 call costs 8.1 cents, 20mins call costs 45.9 cents

Anyways, the point is, since fring can only use wifi to make a skype call, you are probably at home, well use a pc then if you have the skype unlimited plan. (don't do what i did by mistake).

Fring is great for coefee shops, air plan terminal, all locations with wifi. Fring will only get better with the voice quality. I noticed no disconnects, althought adding 011 1 to all my contacts bugs me, too bad its not automatic, i say this is the big draw back, but if a conect is saved with the 011 1 added then it makes things easier, also history has it already.

If you are like me and have unlimited evenings and weekends, then dont make skypeouit calls as its costs money, but calling a skype contact is free. I have limited daytime, so i would be using fring during the day in emergency situation as I am not always in an area with wifi.

And I wont be using fring at home, as I have a laptop and a pc with skype on it, and I have a asus EEE I can take with me if I need.

So fring is cool, and it works, a few bugs with call being terminated before it dials (work around for this error, seems to be use skype on a pc, and call your #, and hang up, if skype dials out the call then problem is fixed, for some reason this lets calling #s work again on fring, maybe it resets a flag on skype).

I am very interested in testing out the sip features on fring, maybe it will be better then the skype option.

I just don't like the idea of using skypeout on a cell phone and paying for local calls where I can easily use the cell phone itself to make the call and cost less.

One last thing, when testing out fring, I noticed for some reason the battery usage was not so good, even when I was not making a call, it sucked power. Maybe the cpu usage in fring is too high, but my fix to that was to shut off the iphone and turn it back on and the problem disapeared.

apple sucks

I have a 6GB data plan on the iphone.

Heres the thing, you cant install apps that are over 10MB on 3G, you cant use voip apps over 3G, you most likly cant use file sharing programs. you cant download stuff over the ned, and if you did if its over 10MB you cant download it. oh ya, you can even use the iphone as a modem for internet access on your pc. I am not sure if its apple or at&t that set this limit.

In Canada we are allowed to use a3G phone as a modem, so I am not sure why not have a program that detects if your plan allows it or not, and if it does enable internet sharing etc, or have a program that only allows a computer connected/or other device to have sms/email only access. Or small bandwidth limits.

The iphone doesnt support adobe flash, and will not in the future (the is becuase adobe and apple have similar products), also there is no javavm, so you cant install java programs like you can do on the palm tv and most cell phones.

WHat can I say? Apple sucks.

Too many limitations on a $400-$500 hunk of junk.

I consider the iphone a platform, a mini pc, imagine if Microsoft told us what we can and can not run on windows? well we would be pissed, so what gives the right for a company to come out with a somewhat pda that can run apps and give such limitations.

I can understand an ipod, its for music thats it, but the iphone is much more then that, its a platform. If the iphone was cheap ($100) then I would understand such limitations, but its not, its expensive so it has to play by the rules of the big boys.

so for all you looking for a iphone, dont bother. It gets mucky, greesy, and so unprofessional. I used pdas for over 8 years and never let the screen get dirty or scratched, but something about usung the iphone that I dont like. I wish it had a spot for a sleek slylus and/or it had a jog dial function like the clie or palm. But you know apple, they like to stick that one mouse button BS up peoples a**. I wish there was two models of the iphone, one for people who like to use there fingers, and the other for professionals who like to use a pen and use hndwriting reconition.

With all these limitations on the iphone, I see it pointless to get a big data plan, as there is no way to use that much data. Even 1GB per month is too much. 500MB is more pratical.

I don't see how cell phone companys can push data packages with the iphone being so limited, so if the iphone is trying to protect something, its loosing a lot in the process, and then people are jailbreaking there iphones to get around such stupid restrictions and that means apple looses in the end.

For those looking for a smart phone, get a blackberry or palm or nokia. Even that new google things looks good. Or if you are looking for portable computing get an Asus eee or simitar or a nokia 770, 810 etc, they work great with linux.

A new thing I found out that missing, is the webbrowser on the iphone can't download files. And I guess in the SDK terms to make apps, scripting applications are not allowed such as java and adobe flash. They don't want a program that can run other programs as they want people to buy stuff from the app store.
