THE US Air Force is kitting out its soldiers with phasers as a non-lethal method for controlling crowds.

Designed by the Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy Directorate, the Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response, (yeah it spells PhaSR) shoots a low-power beam of laser light that blinds an individual.

It is about the size of an M60 machine gun and according to Stars and Stripes, it has the effect to walking out from a dark area into bright sunlight.

It is not exactly a Star Trek weapon suitable for away missions either. According to Stars and Stripes, it is years years away from deployment and you have to be a good shot to hit a target in the eyes. It can only take out one target at a time. You are probably better off with a water cannon.
