WD starts shipping gigantic enterprise drives

HARD DRIVE MAKER Western Digital said it has started shipping 500GB Serial ATA RAID drives, aimed at the enterprise market.

The WD RE2 RAID edition units have a 3Gb/s transfer rate and include 16MB cache - aimed at NAS (network attached storage), and at DAS (direct attached storage). The drives have a rating of 1.2 million hours before failure, said WD. [Is that 120 years? Ed.]
