Plusnet suffers hack attack

Apologises to customers for spam volume
Thu May 17 2007, 10:27
PLUSNET SAID it's a serious security problem and a third party has illegally accessed its webmail database.

According to the company, this third party has got a list of email addresses and is spamming its customers with unwanted stuff.

In a letter to its customers, Plusnet said the Webmail is separate from personal information like credit card numbers and the like. "However, purely as a precaution, we would advise you to change your account password," the letter said.

After doing an audit of its Webmail service to fix the problem, Plusnet noticed there were security vulnerabilities it couldn't patch. So until it replaces its Webmail system, it has pulled the current system.

Networks director Phil Webb told customers that it will publish a full incident report and its plans before this weekend. "This will explainexactly what has happened and how," he said. There's recorded information on 0207 517 8754 that further outlines the situation. µ
