BBC ropes in Adobe for multi-platform Iplayer

Flash magic
Tuesday, 16 October 2007, 15:15

ADOBE IS WORKING with the BBC to make the broadcaster's Iplayer service available to to Macintosh and Linux users by the end of the year.

Adobe will take over the development of a free streaming version of the player for OS X, Linux and Windows.

The fact the Iplayer was available only to Windows XP users as a video download service miffed many. Some were so bothered they even posted a petition on the Government's daft ePetitions page.

Adobe said that the new player will be Flash based and will offer live and on-demand video content.

But the deal is be non-exclusive, so the Volish snout won't be put out of joint too much. The service will still only be available only in the UK, however. ยต

Flash for BBC, Bleah!

It's still Flash, and it's still proprietary.

Much better to have mp4.

Could still be mp4

The recent beta flash players are all supporting mp4 as a video codec.
So depending on when this is released, and what flash player it targets, its possible that the content could be mp4.
