Sony cranks up Blu-ray propaganda machine

The war is over, we won
Tuesday, 13 February 2007, 11:32
SONY'S MARKETING team has opted for the George Bush approach to the format war with HD-DVD.

Just as the battle starts to heat up, Sony is declaring that the war is over and it has won it.

January sales figures provided by Nielsen VideoScan, show that Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD in January by a ratio of 2:1. This lead Sony Pictures Home Entertainment worldwide president David Bishop to say that it is going to use the figures to 'prove' to punters that it has won the format and they should buy Blu-ray now.

To make that leap of faith, Sony is having to ignore the fact that Blu-ray released lots of of disks in January, HD-DVD didn't need to because it has been around a bit longer.

It will be more accurate to see if the format war is won when a movie is released on the same format simultaneously. Apparently that is not going to happen until the sales figure for February for 'Babel' and 'The Departed' are released.
