Ebay cuts listing prices

Increases selling prices
Tuesday, 29 January 2008, 14:36

ONLINE AUCTIONEER Ebay said it will lower its listing prices worldwide in an attempt to attract more vendors.

The firm said it will reduce its listing fees by between 25 to 50 per cent, but where there is a swing, there is a roundabout, because it will charge more if items are successfully sold.

The firm said it will also put an eagle eye on vendors who attempt to charge excessive shipping fees or inaccurately describe items they’re selling.

The changes will start on February 20th in the USA, and gradually be rolled out worldwide. µ

The way I understand it, this a way of reducing the end percent that ebay take. In competitive markets (mp3 players) this is a way to pass a saving on to the buyer. So while they maybe looking out for the tiny amount of users that dont factor in delivery they really only care about their bottom line

bogus shipping charges

"it will also put an eagle eye on vendors who attempt to charge excessive shipping fees..."

Yes, this may be an attempt by vendors to shank eBay out of some of the seller fee -- but in may cases it's also an attempt to shank the buyer.

ONLY $5.99 (with $50 s&h in small print)

It's a way to pad the profit. And because you've agreed to it by bidding on the item, you have to pay the excessive s&h fees. You can't protest after the fact. Some hide their bogus s&h chargees by providing a "calculator" so no firm fees are even in print. Some people only use the calulator after they have "won" the item and then they are quite surprised.

ebay can lick it

ebay really needs to consider the direction they are moving in. last year they raised listing fees, which lowered the user base (amongst other factors such as alternative sites to sell on)

its nice more money for them, but defeats the purpose for sellers to lose a lot on a small profit margin low earning items.

anyway i have been an avid user since 2001, but slowly started watching what i listed on ebay...and this is will shrink further
