absurd

He should fired but instead he's getting a raise for the great performance of AMD? I don't get it.

And not just any pay raise, 7.4%...

Dead Horse

Pay for a CEO should be based on the company's performance. The board can only expect more of the same since they encourage failure. Their pay goes up while a shareholder's goes down? Unacceptable!

AMD is in huge trouble. After admitting they failed to pay anywhere near the actual value of ATI he is rewarded with a raise!?

There is more bad news coming, no doubt. What bothers me is that these sick people are just filling their pockets before AMD goes bust - they can't keep operating at these losses with such insane amounts of debt.

What happened to linking an executive's pay raise with their company turning a profit? Oh wait... That would be INTEL...

Rewards for performance - not promises

Even in the face of short term losses, I would support a raise for someone who has shown that long term delivery will not be an issue. However, this cannot be taken for granted. AMD has stumbled badly, and in light of this any such raise should come after Ruiz has proven AMD's abilities - not before.

It really is simple. I'm not sure Ruiz is the right guy for the job. If so, why offer a raise? Stock options ok. But a salary raise?

seriously.

The salary is ceremonial. He gets his real money from stock options. With AMD stock so down, he very likely won't be getting anythin.

puh-leese!

A 7.4% pay raise for nearly running a company into the ground? I thought thier stock was cheap a few months ago when I bought it... it's now almost worth half! Thanks Hector!

They found he could deceive people easily so they like to keep him because they plan to do the same thing over again next year.

Was it just Hector...?

I suspect the board decided to increase the salary of all members of the board, an Ruiz just happened to be one of them.

Eli Harari of Sandisk gave himself a 15% pay cut. What did Ruiz do to deserve a raise?

Promised not to screw up anymore?

And broke the promise right away? Heh, I think I'll opt out for a set of 8800GT's instead of 3870's, cuz I really don't want my money going to this Ruiz.

Insanity

With the sort of performance that AMD has had this year, I am rather annoyed and dismayed. As others have said before me, raises should be given based off of company performance.

I dearly hope that AMD can deliver on its promises the coming year. If they fail to do so, who knows what will happen to the industry and the consumer as a whole.

That being said, I remain confident that AMD can turn things around, but it will take some time. I don't want to have to build another Intel rig over the next couple of years because AMD could not deliver.

Must be nice...

I wish I could get a raise for running a company into the ground. Hector is the Best thing that ever happened to Intel. I guess since his stocks are taking a dive, and he's put the company in a tailspin, it is time for hime to prepare his golden parachute...

absurd is right

Steve Jobs gets no salary. Eli Harari of SanDisk gave himself and other executives a 15% pay cut. Ruiz gets a raise! This is one sicko.

Why everyone is against Ruiz?

After all, 64 bit technology was released during his conduction of AMD, and as an electrical engineer, Ruiz boosted every idea that was a potential viable improvement over old Athlon XP, just to relase world first 32/64 bit processor.

OK maybe he is responsible of waking up the beast inside intel, who released all the fancy core 2 techno, and made intel go to the technological-top, again in 2006.

In my opinion we would still be using Athlon XP if it wasn't thanks to Ruiz. But we can't know that, we could just imagine.

If I had to mention a big mistake, to me it would be the time AMD took to realize the importance of the "backward compatibility route". Socket A was alive for 5 years, leaving a lot of people spilling happiness out of their pocket. And even if the last days of that socket were a bit rough, it was an overall very succesful platform with huge backward compatibility. But when 64 bit was released, we got 940 and 754 sockets and suddenly 939 which practically dissappeard when AM2 came out. Which isn't what AMD fanbois want.

So, I must say that the Phenom processor is a very nice addition to the market, not to mention its outselling Intel quads, and making people happy to be able to put a quad core into an "old" AM2 mobo. I still do heavy multitasking and Phenom is just like putting 2xAthlon X2 together, no more no less, and with a better price point than intel.
(just take a look on how many quads intel has on the market, and make and special look at which price they are selling them. And I'm not going to move out of my motherboard).

After all, we are all mad about the late release of the processor. We are all mad at the "pointless"-"true" quad techno while they could just put 2 Athlon X2 cores together on HT. But guess what, AMD is pointing to the future, AMD doesn't have the power but they still impress me for being a small david. It will just take time.

I would forget about the "big trouble" AMD is in. Its nothing new to me actually. There will always be an AMD, and it will always be close to the edge. But I can't think on a monopoly, that wouldn't survive too long with the anti-monopoly laws everywhere in the world specially in Japan, Europe and USA.

I would specially be prudent before talking about Ruiz, without knowing nothing about enterprises, how giants drive them, or how it is the labour of CEOs in general.

CEO salary is ceremonial?

To the (less then intelligent) person who says the CEO salary pay is ceremonial and they're pay is options - when you're options are worth $0 as the stock price keeps falling, suddenly the $1Mil salary is no longer ceremonial...

And if it IS CEREMONIAL, wouldn't it be a much better PR spin to lower the salary as it doesn't matter anyway?

For those who say support competition, buy AMD... perhaps don't buy AMD... get the CEO removed...and then perhaps AMD may get more competitive. Rewarding a company for inferior products and poor execution is the best way to encourage more of that behavior.

Dumb and dumber just got a leg up from the leg dog

Wow, raises based on negative performances. WOOT. Where do we sign up for a loser company and get a raise for running something into the ground???

Cry me a river about his stock option loss. He will just get more worthless stock in place of the damage he has done. He should be CEO for a company like Smith Corona making manual type writers....... IDIOT! Hope the stockholders are happy getting shafted.

Got green??? um, no... Got green ass!

I'm sure intel is happy about this

Just let ruiz run AMD into the ground and pay him more for his poor performance. I'm sure this all fine with intel. Being an intel fan, I have no qualms about paying someone who has seemingly run amd into the ground.

What about AMD's cash flow shortage? This is possibly the worst time AMD could give a raise.

Thanks for the laughs.

recognition of superior powerpoint performance

It is obvious that the AMD Board of Directors has seen the amazing PowerPoint that Hector and his team have delivered to the market.

No other company can match Hector's brilliant "QuadFather", "Spider", "Agena", "Shanghai", etc. These codenames strike fear into the heart of Intel!

As developing PowerPoint is far cheaper than developing working processors, the Board of Directors has to recognize that Hector is positioning the company for major cost savings. Soon, AMD will get rid of "overhead" like fabs and engineers.

Isn't this worth a large pay increase?

I wonder what Jerry has to say about this? Maybe he'll say "I FORGOT... ONLY REAL MEN HAVE FABS! WHY DID I PICK HIM?".

He's leaving!

Maybe I am reading this wrong or too much into it, but it looks like the acceleration of vesting and the option to take his retirement pay as a lump sum as long as he does by Dec. 31st is the board giving him an incentive to leave or it's making arrangements to pay-off Hector for an already agreed departure.

HPQ went through this too...

... and it took the company too darn long to kick Carlita out... Hector is on his way out for sure, he just doesn't see it yet... AMD needs to pull together or the only thing left for that company is the Emirates market... the Arabs will have thier own chips to play in the sand with...
