Obama gets on track for gamer votes

The new race for the White House
Tue Oct 14 2008, 14:20

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE Barak Obama is going after the Yoof Vote by shelling out for advertising space in a racing game.

Burnout Paradise will feature Obama's gurning gob on in-game billboards throughout the Xbox and PS3 release.

Approximately one in three US households has a console of one flavour or another and the elusive 'Generation Y' vote could turn the tide in Obama's favour at the forthcoming election if they can be persuaded to get up off their backsides and vote.

Can't quite see how encouraging them to play racing games on their consoles by sunbsidising the price with advertising revenue is gonna work. µ

Gaming and advertising do not mix

When I play a game, I want to GET AWAY from the continuous, all-pervasive advertising that permeates the world around me.
If a game must include advertising for some logical reason, it should be some funny, alternative kind that immerses me while giving me a chuckle or two.
I don't play car games, so I cannot specifically comment on that environment, but really I do not like REAL advertising in any way, shape or form, and simply do not accept paying for a game and getting advertising with it.
If you want to include ads in a game, you damn well better give the game for free - then I can understand. If I pay, NO ADS. Period.

And that's why...

(arm ripping off for you AD fans) You ALWAYS Read The License Agreement.

If you don't like online advertisements, you do not purchase a game that has them in it.
If the distributor of the game does not give a fair chance to review the License Agreement (which will contain language about contacting ad servers), complain to them.

I mean really, it's got zero to do with Obama and all to do with the greed of the game distributors.

In a racing game I don't have a problem with in-game ads because (DING DING DING) in real life, races are FULL of ads!

If I had to play a WW2 sim and see a viagra ad, well that's just gonna royally piss me off.

Again, read the EULAs, pressure distributors and vote with your wallets.

just a bad obnoxious idea

people play games to go into a virtual world of fun.
bringing politics into this world is breaking a boundry and frankly disgusting. if you like obama perhaps you don't mind. but if it were the not the candidate you wanted it would frankly p*ss you off. and people go into games to relax, not have outside garbage tossed in their face. politics is divisive and shouldn't be put into gaming entertainment like that.

Advertising in games is bad

If any politicians here paid for an ingame advertisement I would refuse to vote for them. I wouldn't care if the politician was the second coming of Christ, I would not vote for them.

I've already paid $100 for a game, why do I want to have advertising in it? I play games to get away from reality.

Too much money in politics

It is nice to see Obama follow through on his pledge to go the public financing route to lessen the impact of money in politics.

Oh wait, he realized he can raise more money and outspend his opponent 3:1 on advertising. I guess when you are spending 3million PER DAY on TV ads, you need to spread the rest of the money elsewhere. His campaign should probably push well over $0.5Bil when all is said and done.

Meet the "new politics" same as the "old politics", just packaged a lot better.

Not all gamers are lazy and apathetic

While the generalization is amusing and often accurate, there are many, many cases where it is not true; more than you might think, and especially these days. As the author points out, approximately 1/3 of households have a gaming console. Not all of them or even most of them are owned by basement dwelling, dice rolling nerds. Video games have become quite mainstream, and are even starting to become cross-generational. So buying in-game campaign ads isn't that bad of an idea at all.

Advertising in games is good

...as long as its realistic. I've always liked in game advertising as well as in film advertising as long as its done so as to appear as it would it real life. Its by those means that games and films acquire a unique authenticness. As a modder for CounterStrike Source, I and others in my community have often added our own real world advertising touches such as drink machines harboring realistic brands in order to further immerse the player.
