Nokia shells out $20 million to Qualcomm

But nothing to do with current spat
Thursday, 5 April 2007, 12:57
BIG PHONE firm Nokia said it has given Qualcomm $20 million to cover patent licences in the second quarter of 2007.

This money is related to UMTS patent licences and is unrelated to the current flurry of paper flying between Nokia and Qualcomm matters.

Nokia said it will make similar payments in the future. This $20 million covers the use of Qualcomm patents in Nokia UMTS handsets. It said it's so far paid less than three per cent of cumulative licence fees on licence agreements using WCDMA products.

It said, somewhat plaintively, that it retains the right to ask Qualcomm to respect Nokia patent rights which have significant value. ยต
