JAPANESE GIANT Toshiba said that it can and will make a 30GB dual layer HD DVD-R disk.

It said that this extends the capacity for a write once nextgen DVD disk in line with the DVD Forum's vresion 1.9 specs.

It said it wants to bring an HD DVD recorder to the market next spring which supports the disks.

The dual layer disk uses a similar structure to current DVD platters, can be manufactured using processes similar to DVD-R, uses an organic dye as the data storage medium, and a spin coating process for depositing the dye.

Before releasing the disks, Toshiba said it would undergo a compatibility test with other manufacturers' offerings in mid-October. µ
